What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?
Medigap policies work with Original Medicare. Depending on the lettered plan, a policy may help with certain Medicare deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance.
- Original Medicare remains your primary coverage.
- You can generally use Medicare-enrolled providers who accept Medicare patients.
- Benefits for the same lettered plan are standardized in most states, but premiums, discounts, underwriting, service, and companies vary.
- Not every plan letter or company is available in every state.
Compare the same plan letter across companies and review current state-specific enrollment rights.

Medicare Supplement Plans Made Simple
Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)
Learn how a Medigap policy may help with certain Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs, depending on the lettered plan and policy terms.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) covers a lot—but not everything. That’s where a Medicare Supplement, also known as a Medigap policy, comes in. These plans help cover the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare leaves behind, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
Examples of Original Medicare costs in 2026
- Part A deductible: $1,736 for each inpatient hospital benefit period.
- Hospital coinsurance: $434 per day for days 61–90 and $868 per lifetime reserve day for days 91–150.
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance: $217 per day for days 21–100 when Medicare requirements are met.
- Part B deductible: $283 for the year.
- Part B coinsurance: usually 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the deductible when the provider accepts assignment.
A Medigap policy may pay some of these costs depending on the plan. Amounts shown are for 2026 and can change annually. Verify current Medicare costs.
How a Medigap Plan Helps:
A Medicare Supplement policy may help pay some Original Medicare cost sharing, depending on the lettered plan and policy terms. It does not replace Medicare and does not cover every health care expense.
For the same lettered plan, basic benefits are standardized in most states, while premiums, discounts, underwriting, administration, and company service can differ.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any doctor with a Medicare Supplement plan?
With Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement plan, you can generally use providers that accept Medicare.
What can I do if my premium increases?
Review available plans and any state-specific enrollment protections. Eligibility and underwriting rules vary.
Does Medigap include prescription coverage?
New Medigap plans generally do not include outpatient prescription coverage; separate Part D coverage may be needed.
Can one Medigap policy cover both spouses?
