Medicare is federal health insurance primarily for people age 65 and older. Certain younger people with disabilities and people with End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS may also qualify.
Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. Many people also consider prescription drug coverage, a Medicare Supplement plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan depending on their needs and location.
How Medicare Works
- Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and certain home health services.
- Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment.
- Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is a private-plan alternative for receiving Part A and Part B benefits.
- Part D helps cover prescription medications through Medicare-approved private insurers.
Why Medicare Matters
Medicare helps eligible individuals manage medical costs and access necessary care. Because Original Medicare does not cover every cost, it is important to compare how additional coverage options handle premiums, provider access, prescriptions, and out-of-pocket expenses.
